Gala Proceeds Benefit Lawrence Students and Teachers
The education foundation’s LTEF Goes Hollywood Gala was a huge financial success for the organization, bringing in over $100,000. After expenses, LTEF found itself with $90,000 to fund programming in the Lawrence Township Public Schools. Several gala sponsors targeted their support to specific programs. Bristol Myers Squibb dedicated its $15,000 to Biophase, a revamping of the high school biology curriculum. In an effort to accommodate all ninth graders (as mandated by new state regulations) and in order to provide quality lab experiences, the high school needed new equipment and materials. Bristol Myers Squibb stepped forward to ensure that the local schools had what they needed. In fall 2008, BMS added another $10,000 to their funding so that more labs could be outfitted with state-of-the-art capabilities. Merrill Lynch used the LTEF gala to continue their support of the district’s mathematics instruction. A $10,000 grant was made to provide training for elementary school classroom teachers in the Math Out of the Box curriculum that the district is implementing. PNC Bank donated $1,000 through its Princeton Area Community Foundation account to support student leaders at Lawrence High School. The students attended the Lindsey Myer Teen Institute over the summer. There they acquired skills and a knowledge base to encourage their peers to choose a healthy and substance-free lifestyle. LTEF is in the process of working with the district to allocate the remaining gala funds. See also event photos. |
