LTEF Brings Rachel's Challenge to Lawrence

Rachel Scott - Start a Chain Reaction
The journals of Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine High School Tragedy, inspires us to start a chain reaction of compassion.

Lawrence Township Education Foundation (LTEF) is sponsoring a series of presentations of a nationally-known character education program in Lawrence Township on Wednesday, February 21st. The program, called Rachel's Challenge, calls students and community members to embrace values of kindness and compassion. It was inspired by the journals of Rachel Scott, the first student to be killed in the Columbine High School tragedy. Rachel wrote: "I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go." Now, Rachel's Challenge sends that message out to her generation.

Students will attend an assembly program asking them to take the challenge and commit themselves to creating a safe and compassionate school environment. Community members are invited to attend an evening presentation (7:00 PM in the High School Auditorium) which includes powerful video of Rachel and of the Columbine massacre as well as a training session that reinforces the message that students heard during the daytime assembly. As a follow-up to the presentations, teachers and trained student leaders will implement ideas for encouraging kindness and compassion at Lawrence High School. This project was funded by LTEF in response to a request from LHS educators Tonia Moore, Linda Weltmann, Mindy Milavsky and Andrew Zuckerman. Please join LTEF in this important effort to ensure safe schools in Lawrence Township.
