Kids love math in Lawrence Township! How do we know? Because Lawrence Intermediate School fourth grader Marifred Evans told the Board of Education so at their September meeting. Why do kids in Lawrence love math? According to Marifred, it has a lot to do with the recently adopted "Math Out of the Box" and "My Math Closet" programs. And Merrill Lynch is happy to hear it. The company recently contributed $5,000 to the Lawrence Township Education Foundation (LTEF) to support this innovative approach to math education. Helene Garcia, Merrill Lynch's Vice President for Community Leadership was on hand at the Lawrence Board of Education meeting to hear about the impact that funding has had and to be recognized by LTEF.

LTEF President Theresa Wrobel thanked Ms. Garcia for spearheading Merrill Lynch's funding of a lending library of math skill-builders at the Intermediate School. Thanks to Merrill Lynch the school's "Math Closet" contains many interactive games, manipulatives, and activities that students use in class and can sign out to take home. Families can work together to deepen understanding of math concepts, reinforce learning and have fun with math. The "Math Out of the Box" curriculum engages students in inquiry-based learning, using kits that contain hands-on activities. "My friends and I like doing the activities and it keeps math from becoming boring," said student Marifred Evans. The Math Closet reinforces students' ability of how to apply math to everyday situations.

Lawrence Township Education Foundation is a non-profit organization devoted to enhancing educational opportunities for Lawrence Township students; it has funded over 270 programs in the Lawrence schools since 1992.
