2004 Spring Grants Announced

Grants make a difference
LTEF averages $100,000 in grants each year for the benefit of public school students.

LTEF is pleased to announce that the following grants were approved for funding on March 5, 2004.

Knitting Express

(Marilyn Katz)

This grant funds supplies for a knitting project for fifth graders that will be developed into a service learning program with knitted goods being donated to the needy.

Our Watershed: Living Downstream

(Elizabeth Conboy, Dave O'Neal)

Seventh graders will visit the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia to do hands-on labs, will have an in-class presentation by the StonyBrook- Millstone Watershed Association and will get new topographical maps.

Respect and Conserve

(Richard Beach)

This grant will bring outdoor education speakers to the LIS Outdoor Classroom to reinforce environmental awareness.

Setting the Stage for Tolerance

(Tonia Moore)

Our eighth graders and high school sophomores will attend presentations done by Dr. Mykee Fowlin on diversity and the importance of accepting differences. Small-group discussions will reinforce the message.

Climbing to the Top

(Keith Fithen, Ryan Matheson)

This project will bring two climbing walls to the Lawrence Middle School. Adventure-based curricula can increase physical fitness as well as self-esteem and interpersonal skills.

Accelerated Reader For Basic Skills Students

(Kathie Baldassari, Nancy Horvath, Donna McLoughlin, Linda Thomas, Kathleen Smith )

This program will bring "Accelerated Reader" materials to Lawrence Intermediate School to encourage reluctant readers. The focus is on "hooking" students into enjoying reading and tracking their literacy progress.

Creating Math Nooks with Math Books

This grant will purchase books with math-related themes for Eldridge Park Elementary School, where they will be placed in classrooms and the library in an effort to increase math literacy.

Flutissimo

(Lee Neamand, Mindy Blair, Melinda Grant)

Ms. Neamand and her students requested funding for the purchase of a bass flute for the high school and a guest musician to run a master class in flute.

Developing Emotional Maturity

(Linda Weltmann, Tonia Moore, Mindy Milavsky, Mark Uzupis, Dave Milinowicz)

The training paid for by this grant will create a group of teachers at Lawrence High School who will help to students develop emotional maturity though a variety of anger management techniques.

Stress Busters

(Linda Weltmann, Mindy Milavsky)

This grant is also aimed at positively impacting the school environment at LHS. Teachers and students will be trained at Robert Wood Johnson in a variety of stress-relieving strategies that they will share with students experiencing stress.

Systemic School Change from the Bottom Up

(Don Proffit)

A team of LHS educators will travel to Colorado to present at an international conference on Reform with Results. The presentation will feature the shared-leadership model that is being used at the high school and will further our reputation as a quality public school system.

88 Keys to Success

(Adam Eggleston, Sandra Fuhr, Jonathan Shulan, Ian White)

This grant will purchase several new pianos for Lawrence Intermediate School for use in the choral and instrumental music programs.

Touchable Math Center

(Joe Sullivan, Shelly Rowe, Vivian Reccoppa)

A math center will be set up at Eggerts Crossing Village that will be used to provide additional math instruction for students there. District staff will help students use software, text books and manipulatives to increase math skills.
