2003 Fall Grants Announced

Grants make a difference
LTEF averages $100,000 in grants each year for the benefit of public school students.

LTEF is pleased to announce that the following grants were approved for funding on October 31, 2003.

A Literacy Center for Teachers, Administrators & Parents
Collaborative Learning in Reading Education

(D. Porwancher, J. Bilik, J. Lapidow, J. Weiner, S. MacDonnald)

These funds will be used to purchase materials for a center focused on early childhood literacy and for hosting a series of informational seminars on the topic.

The ABC Exchange
Art Bridges Communities

Students at Ben Franklin Elementary will work with students from Mott Elementary in Trenton to create a mural under the direction of a professional artist at Ellarslie Museum.

Chess for Children, Chess for Life

Ben Franklin third graders will have the opportunity to learn to play chess while honing their math, problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

Rhythm Village
Building Community Through Music Improvisation

This artist-in-residence program will have Ben Franklin's K-3 students making their own percussion instruments to use with visiting musicians who will help them create unique rhythms.

Arts for Life

These funds will provide scholarships for students from Lawrenceville Elementary and Lawrence Intermediate School to participate in a dance and theater program at the Lawrence Neighborhood Service Center.

The Living Bookshelf Project
Bringing "The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" to Life

LIS fifth graders will have the chance to work with a professional lyricist and composer to bring this book to the musical theater stage.

Read Across Lawrenceville
A Celebration of Reading and Writing

Mrs. Devlin's students will create their own story books and then share them with younger children as part of the Read Across America celebration in the district.

Good Food Education
A Lecture Series

LHS student Emily Suzuki and recent grad Mike Azzara will spread the news to other high school students about the importance of healthy eating habits and the possibilities of a vegetarian lifestyle.

The Power of Choice Presentation for LHS Seniors

This assembly program will reinforce the importance of exercising responsibility by not drinking and driving.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Mrs. Wiznitzer and her students at LHS will have state-of-the-art presentation equipment to use in their classroom using LTEF funds.

Computer-Assisted Learning for ESL And World Languages

This interactive software will be used in ESL, French and German classes to help with second language acquisition.
